Mastering the Instinctive Archery Anchor: Land, Feel, Drop Anchor

Greetings, Archers! Coach Yale here.

If you're exploring instinctive archery techniques, there's one critical element you must master early on: the archery anchor point.

I’ll break down how to set your instinctive anchor point using three powerful steps — land, feel, and drop anchor — and explain why it’s the key to consistent and accurate shooting.

What Is an Archery Anchor Point — and Why It Matters

Your archery anchor point is the stable reference spot on your face where your draw hand rests every time you shoot. Whether you're a beginner or seasoned archer, this point must be consistent — otherwise, your arrows will fly unpredictably.

Think of it like this:
A bobber on a lake bounces and floats around. But
an anchor holds your position steady. That’s exactly what we want in archery — a reliable, grounded anchor point that locks your form in place.

High vs Low Anchor Points
The Difference Between High and Low Anchor Points

🔺 High Anchor (Instinctive Archery)

  • ✔️ Used in instinctive or barebow archery
  • ✔️ Anchor at the cheekbone or corner of the mouth
  • ✔️ Ideal for short and long distances
  • ✔️ No sight needed — your body becomes the sight

🔻 Low Anchor (Olympic or Sighted Archery)

  • 🎯 Anchor under the jawline
  • 🎯 Works best with a sight on the bow
  • 🎯 Common in Olympic-style shooting
  • 🎯 Sight alignment is crucial
For instinctive archers: I strongly recommend the high anchor — using the cheekbone as your reference. Why? Your cheekbone is always in the same place. It’s a natural, repeatable landmark that doesn’t change.

3 Steps to Find Your Instinctive Archery Anchor

1. Land

Draw the bowstring back and land your hand where you want to anchor. This step is about settling into a steady position.

2. Feel

Take a moment to feel for consistency. Ask yourself:

  • Does this feel like the last shot?
  • Are my fingertips on the cheek?
  • Is my pinky resting under the jaw?
  • Can I feel the inside of the pointer finger on the cheekbone?

You’re training for muscle memory and precision — every shot should feel the same.

3. Drop Anchor

Now, drop the anchor — lock in your position. Let the connection between your cheek and hand become intuitive, smooth, and strong. This is where the magic happens.

Pro Tip: This intimate connection between your draw hand and face builds over time with practice and body awareness. Respect the process.

Why Consistency Is Everything in Instinctive Archery

The key to great shooting — in any archery style — is consistency.
You could have perfect form, the best bow, and ideal conditions… but if your anchor point varies from shot to shot, your aim will too.

Remember:

  • Anchor location = accuracy
  • Pressure = precision
  • Consistency = confidence
